Pawnee Buttes

April 2003

This trip started out as a crystal hunting venture. There are some chalk bluffs just North of Stoneham, Colorado that have Blue Barrite crystals, which are somewhat unique to just that area. The actual area was posted No Trespassing, so we decided to try digging in an area nearby that might have some crystals. After an hour of digging, we came up dry, so we nixed the rest of the crystal hunt and went exploring cross-country heading towards Pawnee Buttes which are about 20 miles west of where we were digging for crystals.

The first part of the trip brought us by Stoneham, so we decided to swing through town and take a look. It was no more then a bump in the road, but it does have 2 churches and a Grange Hall. And, of course, a Post Office. The old car was found in an arroyo a few miles north of the highway.

There are many windmills and abandoned homesteads out in the Pawnee National Grasslands area. It is fun to walk around the old remnants and try to imagine what things were like 100 years ago.

Here is another old building that has seen better days. We couldn't decide if it was a school or a church.

After several hours of leisurely driving and exploring, we stopped by Pawnee Buttes. This is another area I've been to for many years starting back circa 1970. It is in such contrast to the mountains, yet has a beauty all it's own.
